WB Games Montréal finally shows Gotham Knights in motion, and it’s Batgirl and Robin doing the fighting.

DC FanDome delivered its first real look at gameplay on August 22, 2020, when WB Games Montréal aired a 7-minute, 47-second pre-alpha walkthrough of Gotham Knights. Senior Producer Fleur Marty narrated the footage, walking viewers through an open-world action-RPG built around a Gotham City that has lost its Batman. The demo drops players mid-story with Batgirl chasing down a weather anomaly that turns into a full Mr. Freeze operation.

Inside the Elliot Center Walkthrough

The footage opens with Batgirl investigating unnatural weather conditions choking Gotham, riding the Batcycle across streets already frozen over. She traces the disturbance to the Elliot Center, where Mr. Freeze’s regulators are stationed. It’s the first extended look at how WB Games Montréal is building a story that starts after Bruce Wayne’s death, with the extended Bat-Family picking up the fight rather than the man himself.

Fans who tracked Warner Bros.’ other 2020 reveals, including the Hogwarts Legacy reveal trailer, will recognize the studio’s push toward denser, more explorable open worlds. Gotham Knights leans the same direction, trading the linear Arkham-style corridors for a city players can move through freely between story beats.

Batgirl and Robin’s Combat Toolkit

Once inside the Elliot Center, Batgirl engages Freeze’s regulators using a mix of melee tonfa strikes, ranged baterangs, and stealth takedowns. The interface on screen tracks RPG leveling progress, enemy health meters, and elemental damage modifiers, confirming the loot-and-level systems WB Games Montréal has talked up since the game’s initial announcement. Robin joins the fight through drop-in, two-player online cooperative multiplayer, using teleportation tied to Justice League satellite technology to reach the second wave of enforcers Batgirl can’t handle alone.

Robin doesn’t walk into the fight — he teleports in through Justice League satellite tech, and the enforcers barely see it coming.

The Mr. Freeze Boss Fight

The walkthrough builds to a boss encounter on top of the Elliot Center, where Freeze commands a massive cryogenic weather-control device responsible for the frozen streets Batgirl rode through earlier. Batgirl and Robin spend the fight dodging targeted freeze-beam attacks and falling ice shards while landing coordinated strikes to stagger him. It’s the clearest evidence in the demo that boss fights in Gotham Knights are built for two players working in tandem rather than a single Dark Knight improvising alone.

Release Plans Across Platforms

WB Games has Gotham Knights slated for 2021 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, putting it in the same current-and-next-gen window as titles shown during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. Cross-generation support means players won’t need a PS5 or Series X on day one, though the 4K walkthrough was clearly built to sell the next-gen version of the game.

No firm release date has been attached beyond the 2021 window, and WB Games Montréal has yet to show Nightwing or Red Hood in action — both confirmed as playable but absent from this particular demo. Whatever comes next will have to follow a boss fight this loaded with ice shards and satellite teleports without losing the two-player rhythm that made the Elliot Center sequence work.
