Let’s take a new look at the Post-Apocalyptic Open World game ‘Mad Max’.
Why wasn’t it more popular? This project did so many things right and for some reason, disappeared and was never really talked about after. When I think of underrated gems, this comes in mind.
What made “Rage” unique compared to other open-world action games?
Over the years, the video game industry has witnessed the release of numerous open-world action games that have left gamers fascinated and hooked. However, amidst the plethora of titles, there is one game that has been largely forgotten – the brutal open-world action game that deserves recognition.
Released in 2011, “Rage” was a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda. The game was set in a post-apocalyptic world where players assumed the role of a survivor trying to navigate through a world destroyed by an asteroid that hit the planet. The game was unique in its brutal nature, putting gamers in the middle of cutthroat combat encounters and offering a vast open-world to explore.
What made “Rage” stand out was the world-building and exploration mechanics that made it strikingly different from other games in the genre. The game’s open-world nature allowed gamers to explore a dystopian world that held secrets and dangers at every turn. The game’s use of vehicles also made exploration an active and exciting endeavour with players being able to jump into vehicles and drive around the vast wasteland.
The game’s combat system was another aspect that put it on the map. The game featured an extensive range of weapons, including ones that would appeal to fans of classic shooters like Doom and Half-Life. It also introduced a unique “Wingstick” weapon, which was like a boomerang that could lock onto enemies and return to the player after use.
The AI in “Rage” was also noteworthy, with enemies that were both sturdier and smarter than those found in many other games at the time. Enemy bandits were cautious and utilized cover, making each encounter tactically engaging and challenging.
Despite its strengths, “Rage” did not receive a warm reception upon release, with critics citing that the game’s story was lacklustre and that certain elements of gameplay were tedious and slow. Over time, the game has been overshadowed by other blockbuster open-world releases, and it is now a forgotten gem in the gaming industry.
