Robocop is stepping into the Kombat arena.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios pulled back the curtain on Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath on May 6, 2020, confirming the franchise’s first-ever story expansion. The digital release lands May 26 and picks up exactly where the base game’s campaign left off, dropping Fire God Liu Kang into a fresh crisis over control of time itself. Alongside the new chapter, three fighters join the roster — and one of them fights with a shotgun built into his forearm.

The announcement trailer opens on Fire God Liu Kang settled into his new role as keeper of time, the throne Kronika once occupied now his. That peace doesn’t last. Shang Tsung reappears alongside Nightwolf and Fujin to deliver an unwelcome warning: resetting the timeline without Kronika’s crown in hand will unravel existence itself. That forces Liu Kang into an uneasy partnership with a sorcerer whose entire history in the series is built on manipulation.
NetherRealm has leaned into that tension as the expansion’s core hook — a story about trust and betrayal among characters who have every reason not to trust each other. It’s a direct continuation rather than a side story, meaning Aftermath functions as the actual ending fans didn’t get in the base campaign.
RoboCop Joins the Kombat Roster
The trailer’s biggest reveal is RoboCop, brought into Mortal Kombat 11 with Peter Weller back in the role he originated in RoboCop (1987) and reprised in RoboCop 2 (1990). It’s his first time voicing Alex Murphy in decades, and NetherRealm built the character around his signature arsenal rather than reinventing him for the roster.

RoboCop arrives alongside two familiar faces rather than as a solo addition. Fujin, the God of Wind, and Sheeva, the four-armed Shokan queen, both return to the fighting roster, giving Aftermath three new playable characters total rather than one headline addition padded out with cosmetics.
Pricing and the Free Update for Everyone
NetherRealm split the announcement into two tracks. The paid expansion — $39.99 on its own, $49.99 with Kombat Pack 1, or $59.99 as the full Aftermath Kollection — covers the new story chapter and the three fighters. But a separate, free update ships for every Mortal Kombat 11 owner regardless of whether they buy Aftermath.
That free update restores features the series hasn’t had since the 1990s: Friendships, the goofy non-lethal finishers teased at the very end of the trailer, along with Stage Fatalities and klassic stages including the Dead Pool and the Soul Chamber. It’s a rare move for a fighting game expansion to give away that much for free, and it signals NetherRealm treating the base roster’s goodwill as worth protecting even for players who skip the purchase.
May 26 is now the date to watch — that’s when Fujin, Sheeva, and RoboCop actually become playable, and when the Friendships finishers go live for every Mortal Kombat 11 owner, paying customers or not.
