Warzone finally gets Quads, and Backlot rises from the grave.

Infinity Ward flipped the switch on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 3 on April 8, 2020, and it’s the biggest content drop since Warzone launched a month earlier. The headline change is four-player squads in Battle Royale and Plunder, but the update also brings back a map every Call of Duty 4 veteran will recognize instantly. Two free guns, fresh Operator skins, and a reshuffled playlist round out the patch.

  • Warzone Battle Royale and Plunder now support Quads (four-player squads), expanding beyond the original trios and solos modes.
  • Talsik Backlot, a modernized remake of the classic Backlot map from 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, returns to core multiplayer alongside new maps Aniyah Incursion and Hovec Sawmill.
  • Two free base weapons — the SKS marksman rifle and the Renetti handgun — arrive with the Season 3 Battle Pass and launch update.

Quads Change the Math in Warzone

Since Call of Duty: Warzone dropped in March 2020, squads were capped at three, which meant every fourth friend in a party had to sit out or split off. Season 3 fixes that by adding Quads to both Battle Royale and Plunder, so a full four-stack can now drop into Verdansk together. It’s a structural shift for how contracts, revives, and Gulag runbacks play out — an extra body on a squad changes rotations, buy-back timing, and how aggressively a team can push a firefight.

The move also reshapes the loadout meta a bit, since four-man squads can carry more loadout drops and split up more of the map’s cash and Supply Boxes. Anyone still grinding Warzone Solos will notice matchmaking and squad-size options shifting to accommodate the new format.

Talsik Backlot Brings Back a Classic

Backlot was one of the signature maps of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and its Season 3 remake — rebranded Talsik Backlot — drops players into a war-torn urban construction site full of tight sightlines and close-quarters chokepoints. It lands in the multiplayer rotation alongside two other new maps, Aniyah Incursion and Hovec Sawmill, giving Season 3 three fresh (or fresh-old) places to fight over.

Talsik Backlot, Aniyah Incursion, and Hovec Sawmill headline one of the biggest map drops since Modern Warfare launched.

For players who’ve spent weeks memorizing angles on the launch maps, Backlot’s return is the kind of nostalgia play Infinity Ward has leaned on before — the same instinct that’s driven interest in how the modern remake stacks up against the 2007 original for anyone who’s followed the multiplayer reboot closely since launch.

New Guns and Battle Pass Content

Season 3 hands every player two free base weapons regardless of Battle Pass tier: the SKS marksman rifle for players who want range and one-tap potential, and the Renetti handgun for a fast-firing sidearm option. Both weapons unlock through normal progression and slot into loadouts across multiplayer, Warzone, and Ground War. The Battle Pass itself adds new Operator skins and cosmetic items on top of the usual tier grind.

Combined with playlist updates rolled into the same patch, it’s a lot to digest in one update — the kind of scale that’s made seasonal Warzone patches essential reading for anyone trying to keep their loadouts current.

Backlot’s back, Quads are live, and the SKS is free — that’s three separate reasons to boot the game up this week even if you already burned out on Verdansk solos.
