Golf Story takes the sports-RPG structure and applies it to golf, sending a washed-up amateur through courses, side-quests and a surprisingly dense story mode that plays more like an adventure game with clubs than a traditional sports title. Dead Cells pairs rogue-lite permadeath and procedurally shuffled level layouts with the kind of tight, Metroidvania-influenced combat that made it one of 2018’s most replayed indie releases on any platform. Stardew Valley rounds out the list as the farming-sim entry, letting players build up a plot of land, a town’s relationships and a full in-game economy at whatever pace they choose.
