Two free PS4 games just replaced last month’s chaos with something subscribers can actually count on.

Sony Interactive Entertainment locked in the PlayStation Plus lineup for August 2019 on July 31, giving active subscribers a two-game slate to download starting August 6 through September 2. The picks span anti-gravity racing and covert World War II sniping, and both land as full, previously-released retail titles rather than smaller filler picks.

• WipEout Omega Collection bundles WipEout HD, its Fury expansion, and the Vita entry WipEout 2048, running at 1080p on base PS4 and dynamic 4K/60fps with HDR on PS4 Pro, with full PlayStation VR support across all 26 reversible tracks.
• Sniper Elite 4, developed and published by Rebellion Developments, puts players in the boots of Karl Fairburne in 1943 Italy, picking up directly after Sniper Elite III’s story.
• The stable August rollout follows a rockier July, when Sony pulled the previously announced Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 at the last minute and swapped in Detroit: Become Human instead.

WipEout Omega Collection Headlines the Month

WipEout Omega Collection is the marquee download this month, and it’s a genuinely stacked package for anyone who never got around to buying it. The compilation folds together WipEout HD, the Fury expansion, and the PS Vita title WipEout 2048 into a single PS4 release, giving subscribers 46 unique ship models and 26 reversible tracks to burn through.

On a base PS4 the game runs at 1080p, while PS4 Pro owners get dynamic 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR support switched on. It also supports local split-screen and online multiplayer for up to eight racers, so it’s not just a solo time-attack exercise. The standout feature, though, is full PlayStation VR compatibility — every track and every mode can be played from inside the cockpit, which is a rarity for a game this content-dense.

Sniper Elite 4 Brings the Stealth Half of the Lineup

Where WipEout is pure speed, Sniper Elite 4 is patience and positioning. Rebellion Developments’ third-person tactical shooter drops players into Italy in 1943, immediately following the events of Sniper Elite III, with covert operative Karl Fairburne now working alongside the Italian resistance against fascist forces.

The series’ calling card is still the X-Ray kill camera, which slows time to show exactly what a well-placed round does on its way through a target. Beyond the solo campaign, Sniper Elite 4 ships with large sandbox-style maps, a dedicated cooperative campaign mode, survival modes supporting up to four players, and competitive multiplayer — giving subscribers considerably more replay value than a straightforward single-player shooter.

Full PlayStation VR support across all 26 tracks turns WipEout Omega Collection from a nostalgia pick into one of the more substantial VR libraries hiding inside a PS+ subscription.

A Course Correction After July’s PES 2019 Swap

The timing here matters. Just a month earlier, Sony abruptly yanked Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 from the July lineup and replaced it with Detroit: Become Human right before that month’s games went live, frustrating subscribers who’d been told what to expect. August’s rollout of WipEout Omega Collection and Sniper Elite 4 went out exactly as announced on July 31, with no swaps and no surprises — a small thing, but a notable one for a service that had just taken heat for doing the opposite.

Both titles stay downloadable through September 2, giving PS+ members roughly four weeks to add WipEout Omega Collection’s VR-ready tracks and Sniper Elite 4’s Italian campaign to their libraries before October’s lineup bumps them off the front page.
