Nintendo Switch owners are about to get buried under new releases before August even ends.

Nintendo Life’s early-August roundup laid out just how loaded the Switch’s release calendar is for August 2019, with everything from a PlatinumGames action epic to a card-battler pulling from the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. The lineup spans genres — RPGs, tactics games, puzzle-adventures, rogue-likes — but two titles dominate the conversation: Astral Chain and Oninaki. Both carry pedigree from studios with a track record on the platform, and both land within eight days of each other.

The credits alone set it apart from most of the console’s Nintendo catalog this year: Takahisa Taura directs, Hideki Kamiya — the studio’s Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising veteran — supervises, and manga artist Masakazu Katsura, known for Zetman and I”s, handles character designs. That combination of a rising director with a hands-on supervisor and an established manga illustrator is the kind of pairing PlatinumGames doesn’t assemble often.

The studio built its name on Switch with narrative-driven action-RPGs, and Oninaki continues that pattern with a story built around reincarnation and lost memory — a heavier, more contemplative counterpoint to the flashier PlatinumGames release closing out the month.

The Rest of the August Slate

Nintendo Life’s roundup didn’t stop at the two headliners. Double Fine’s RAD brings its post-apocalyptic rogue-like formula to Switch, while Bandai Namco’s Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet gives fans of the anime series a full port of its gun-and-blade RPG. THQ Nordic’s Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition rounds out the action side of the ledger, bringing Death — the series’ second horseman — to the console with remastered visuals.

Tactics and puzzle fans get Chroma Squad and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy, the indie adventure Pine offers an open-world survival twist without a traditional language system, and Solo: Islands of the Heart pairs environmental puzzles with a story about relationships. Konami closes the list with Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution, a digital card-battler built around the franchise’s Link Summon mechanics — a title that sits comfortably alongside other Titles chasing the trading-card-game crowd on Switch.

That’s eleven releases across four weeks, and the calendar doesn’t let up once August ends — Astral Chain’s August 30 launch effectively becomes the bridge into whatever Nintendo lines up for the fall push. For now, the two dates that matter are circled: August 22 for Oninaki, August 30 for Astral Chain.
