What is the Gulag, and how does it allow players who have been eliminated to fight their way back to the main map?
On March 10th, Activision released a gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated Battle Royale mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, titled Warzone. The Battle Royale genre has taken the gaming industry by storm over the past few years, with the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends drawing in massive player bases. Modern Warfare’s Warzone offers a unique take on the genre, bringing the franchise’s signature realism and intense gunplay to the table.
Warzone takes place on a massive map titled Verdansk, featuring a mixture of sprawling urban environments and rural countryside areas. The map is said to be the largest in Call of Duty history, with a size of 150 players per match. Players can choose to play in either single, duo, or trios modes, maintaining the same player count regardless of which mode is chosen. This allows for a mix of both solo and team-based gameplay that should appeal to a broad range of players.
One of the most significant features showcased in the gameplay trailer is the inclusion of the Gulag. The Gulag is a new mechanic that allows players who have been eliminated to fight their way back to the main map. Upon dying, players are taken to the Gulag, where they will face off against another player in a one on one fight. The winner of this fight is then given the chance to return to the main map and continue their mission.
Another new addition to the genre is the use of Contracts. These are in-game objectives that players can complete for rewards such as cash or loot. They range from scavenger hunts to assassinations and offer an extra layer of depth to the gameplay. The cash earned from Contracts can be used at Buy Stations scattered throughout the map. Here, players can purchase items such as armor, weapons, and even killstreaks.
The gameplay trailer also showcased the use of vehicles throughout the map. Players will have access to ATVs, squad transport trucks, and helicopters to aid in their journey across Verdansk. The addition of vehicles will add a new dynamic to gameplay, both as a viable means of transportation and tools for taking out enemy players.
Warzone is set to be one of the most significant launches of the year, and it’s sure to draw in a massive audience of new and veteran Call of Duty players alike. It promises to bring a fresh take on the Battle Royale genre while staying true to the franchise’s roots. The release of Warzone on March 10th is one that fans of the series should not miss.
